Named the ambassador of the nu soul movement, high expectations were expressed about Conya Doss' fourth studio album Still. As Conya reached a very high standard on her first albums, musically as well as vocally and production wise, the fans wondered if this positive tendency could be exceeded. Let's get rid of all prejudice and question marks. Still turns out to be a very mature album. A lot of typical Doss stuff, but with side - ways to small experiments that prove that Conya isn't scared to broaden her boundaries and wants to progress with her music. From the first tunes of the opening track Common Ground, you feel that this 'thing' is right. Smooth soul cuts with a solid beat and catchy hooks. It's this kind of music that made Conya one of the best contemporary soul voices and hey ... what's good, doesn't have to be changed. Something 2Nite, according to myself has everything to become one of those classic tracks. Highly danceable and highly addicitve. Good music doesn't have to be complex. I often hear typical 'musicateers' analyzing every note and every tone of a song to form the indicator for quality. I totaly disagree on that one and Still is a good example for this. Most of Conya's arrangements aren't that complex but they're grounded on a solid beat and rhythm, covered with sublime vocals and choruses. And I've always believed this shows the capabilities of an artist. One of the mavericks of the album, and a track that has been discussed a lot as a 'not so typical Doss song' is Right on Time. The track reminds me a bit of the typical 2 - step sounds from the Artful Dodger. While some people seem to have a bit of 'problem' with the cut, it only proves to me that Conya doesn't want to be put in a box. The track itself is very nice and even carries a lot of hitpotential. Much respect and hopefully we'll get more of these progressive experiments in the future. Other gems on this 14 track joint are Emotions (dope vibe), Let me love You and Message, though all compositions are high above average. I think, if there is an independent artist that reaches the quality level of icons such as Mary J. Blige or Lauryn Hill, Conya Doss would finish up front. Still simply is a fabulous album that is a must for every collection.
