I've reviewed quite some albums past couple of weeks. A lot of those records really stunned me with the high music quality standard these artists achieve as mostly independent musicians. When I received the Dreemtime album the other day, I wasn't sure what to expect, though I knew one of my favourite vocalists, Maya Azucena, featured on the album. I have to admit I was surprised when listening to Dreamy. Pulling me into a vortex of soul, dance and funk, it turned out that this album would become one of my most precious discoveries so far. Dreemtime is often compared to the music of The Brand New Heavies. Nothing wrong with that, I guess, but I think this is an album that's very difficult to compare with one particular band. Is this soul? Yes it certainly is! Jazzy? No doubt! Does it have funk? Hell yeah! The songs sometimes even have a poppy, eclectic edge, what makes this album brilliant in every way. Hitting off with Rising and Soo Long, Dreemtime bombs you with two stunning cuts in which I sense parts of Massive Attack. The arrangements are smooth, musicaly intriguing and lifted to a higher level by the angel voice of Maya. The first major highlight on this CD comes in the form of Drive Away. A sultry dancefloor killer with funky baseline and guitar hooks. It's that kind of song that makes you want to pump up the volume and go wild. Brick in a Parachute is funded on a classic funk beat, but surprisingly evolves in a kind of latin influenced chorus. Top arrangement here. When I stated that the album is, by all means soulful, it has to be Don't Change that proves it. Dreemtime doesn't bring, just another soul song, but a track that has got all ingredients to be an all time classic. I know I repeat myself , but I have to give credit again to the composers af this beautiful tune and song bird Maya Azucena. Damn, this girl already gave me goosebumps with her Junkyard Jewel CD, and now she's doing it again. By the way, the Radio Play Version of Don't Change, with a slightly different arrangement, still manages to capture the pure beauty of the song and deserves every bit of its purpose. To be out there for a zillion listeners. Sad Sad Sun and its 'James Bond theme' kinda atmosphere, the smooth jazz of Baby so Fine and the funky groove of Cisco, conclude an album that, I think will become a sought after classic, once it gets out there. The music of Dreemtime is fitted for dark and smokey jazz joints as well as for big festival stages and clubs. If you don't buy this one, you're missing out on a fantastic album. A must have !
