I can't mention it enough. Reviewing albums makes 'the world go round' . Getting to know artists that want their 'baby' to be reviewed on www.jazzandsoul.eu just makes my heart jump. Nevertheless, as an independent website we're obliged to listen to these works as objective as possible and while this sometimes is quite difficult, I'm stunned again every day when I notice the amount of quality music released while our charts are chock - full with crap. Another one of those great albums to arrive at Jazzandsoul HQ, is the self - titled debut CD of Honey Brown. Honey describes her album as an extension of herself. 'I write what I've experienced and my songs take the listeners through a myriad of experiences that someone from every age, group or background can relate to.' The album opens with Ghetto Story, as you can guess, about growing up on the streets, poverty etc. Although this is used quite a lot in all different 'black music' genres, Honey's story sticks to your brains. A catchy, vague melody and a fantastic vocal on top. 'The streets they raise you but where do they take you', a straigth in your face lyric if you ask me. While a lot of modern R&B, soul stars' vocal capabilities could be categorized as being average, Mrs. Brown is gifted with one of those multi - layered soprano's. This broadens Honey's musical range into infinity. Prove of this are tracks such as Hot Daddy, a more hiphop orientated cut, Feeling Good in which she plays the high notes accompanied by a smooth, addicitve beat and Go on without You, a classic downtempo soul song in which, again is exhibited what Honey's pipes can do. Super ! All together, Honey Brown is a damn fine collection of soul and R&B music. Nice variation, sang beautifully and with good arrangements. If you come across this one and you still got some space left in that shopping bag ... get it because it's smooth and sweet like honey.
