Maxwell ... from a boy to a man.

Up next in our corner(s)tones of neo - soul series is a performer of whom I believe he didn't have the chance to put his mark properly on the soul music scene. I was privileged to attend a Maxwell show, with an approxiamtely crowd, and that evening definitely changed my view on contemporary soul music. Maxwell (was) the incarnation of 'sexyness', which melted all the ladies within seconds. However, next to the performer, there also is a vulnarable vocalist and composer. Maxwell ... from a boy to a man.

In the beginning ...

Maxwell's career would have been an 'early starter'. At the age of only seventeen, Maxwell began working with Leon Ware and Wah Wah Watson to record his debut album, Maxwell's urban hang Suite back in 1990.
In 1994, the finished product (which was heavily funded on classic soul sounds), didn't impress the record label though, leading to the fact that the album was first shelved before a final release in 1996.
First released single, ... Till the cops come Knocking, landed on 79 in the US R&B charts and therefore didn't quite fulfill expectations. Success however, and a first hitsingle (which earned Maxwell international recognition) came with Ascension (Don't ever Wonder).
I remember the first time playing Maxwell's Urban hang Suite as if it was yesterday. I immediately fell in love with the smooth, sensual and funky album intro, The Urban Theme, flowing into Welcome and Sumthin' Sumthin'. Even today these songs still belong to my all time favourites.
Maxwell's urban hang Suite finally sold over 500 000 copies and was nominated for a Grammy.
