When old school artists try to re - connect with the present - day music scene by releasing new material there mostly are two possibilities : or the artist starts re - chewing his old sound, which brought him success back in the days, or he tries to re - invent himself by making an album that connects with modern music. Guyane born flutist and multi - talented instrumentalist Randy Muller definitely belongs in the second category. About thirty years ago Randy started composing dance - orientated grooves and made himself quite a name with his bands Brass Construction and SKYY, and as mentioned, he now returns, not to remake 70's funk sounds, but as a reborn artist daring to explore new boundaries. With Groovin' U, he launches a twelve track 'instrumental' joint, in which he displays his musical skills as well as his production talent. Main part of the CD is reserved for flute, but the tracks have been decorated with modern rhythms, sultry vocal choruses and offer a perfect product for a relaxing evening, away from the daily grind. Groovin' U contains a variety of styles and tempo's, all perfectly executed and each with it's own characteristic. Uptempo and mid - tempo tracks, such as Call Me, Groovin' U and the clever Brazilian samba Bala will definitely get you on your dancing feet. I must admint though that I was especially charmed by Randy's sensual downtempo tracks as Easy Love, Standin' in da' Rain (with a beautiful Sade like vocal) and Heatwave's classic Always and Forever. I realize that albums in the category of smooth jazz and soul are not everybody's 'cup of tea', for me however an album as Groovin' U offers a perfect way to close my eyes and flee away into another world, away from all daily problems and stress. And when the time arrives for this kind of medicine again, Randy Muller's CD is going to be in my stereo a lot of times. Recommended.
