Mrs. Sebastian is the latest release from Philipino born Renée Sebastian. A 6 track EP that blends elements of classic soul, R&B and pop. An old school horn section announces opening track This is Me. A nu soul groove in which Renée allows us a peek into her life with a no nonsense message. "I worked three jobs to get my degree, to get to where I wanted to be. I know it's easy to look at me and say, "she's probably used her body to get her way." You're mistaking all that I earned, I got from knowledge I learned." Straight in your face. These are the Signs and Good morning Son are two songs that lean against a rather poppy vibe. Both sunny, uplifting and a lot of hitpotential. Nice anecdote ... when playing Good morning Son, someone asked me if I was listening to a Carpenters track. What bigger a compliment can a girl get, I guess. In Please break my Heart, again, the impressive alto voice of Renée takes frontstage in a more classic soul cut. Beauty in it's simplicity. Every Lesson, which is stated as the final cut on this EP mixes pop with soul, but again manages to go beyond average quality with a heavenly chorus and sublime horn breaks. Please, when checking out Mrs. Sebastian, be patient for the bonus track which is implemented in Every Lesson. Her Beauty serves as a perfect conclusion of a beautiful album. Raw, naked, pure, soulful and jazzy. Another demonstration of the tremendous pipes of Renée, accompanied here by piano in a divine composition. Some of my colleague reviewers mentioned Renée Sebastian as a new discovery in soul music. I totally agree. I hope we haven't heard the last of this talented, young artist and I'm eager to hear what she has in store for the future. Highly recommended.
