When I had the idea of starting the JazzandSoul re - decked sessions, it was a bit with this album in mind. I remember as if it was yesterday, when I first heard Ronny Jordan and his debut album The Antidote. It was love 'at first hear', absolutely, and since that day back in 1993, The Antidote became a CD, which I often had to turn off in the morning, after falling asleep with it the day before.
If I'd have to categorize the album, I would call it smooth acid jazz. Putting it in a box minimalizes the art however, as The Antidote is the perfect smooth jazz guitar collection for me.
Now ... about 15 years later, smooth jazz has become a common term, and to be quite frankly, is a genre that spouts more releases than any other style, ... yes too much sometimes. Back than, Mr. Jordan was mainly an anonymous artist for a lot of fans. It was his Antidote though that brought renewal, and a fresh original breeze (partly introduced by artists such as George Benson) into jazz music. After that, I've always been a huge fan of Ronny Jordan. I've had the privilege of seeing him perform a couple of times and I've dissected every song he wrote. It still sounds amazing.
The Antidote houses some of my all time favourite guitar grooves. So What, still is one of the best impressions I've heard of Miles Davis' classic tune, After Hours is the perfect, relaxing lounge track (and played in an era where lounge wasn't a word yet) and Summer Smile ... well ... the title speaks for itself.
After The Antidote, Ronny Jordan gained visibility and recognition by featuring on Jazzmatazz's biggest hit No time to Play and a follow up full CD, The quiet Revolution, that contained the single, The Jackall.
The Antidote will probably be an album, forgotten by a lot of fans, or even not yet discovered by others.
For me it opened a new horizon in music and will probably always be one of my favourites.
