Interview with Soul:IDJazzandSoul : Hi guys, how should you introduce Soul:ID in about ten words ? Soul:ID : Dad'D : Four friends, four identities with a common love for soul, hence the name Soul:ID, love, trust, ambition, music, dreams, challenge. JazzandSoul : When listening to your album, I find it difficult to compare your music with other artists. How would you guys describe it and who are your influences ? Soul:ID : V : We call it Afropean music. It is actually a term Zap Mama uses to label herself and us. It perfectly describes our multiple roots and influences when it comes to music. JazzandSoul : Soul:ID consists of four members with, to say the least, very different backgrounds. How was Soul:ID formed ? Soul:ID : Tchaï : We all are from different backgrounds (Tchaï from Burundi, Dad'D from D.R. Congo, V from Rwanda and Urban Deep from Austria/Belgium). We all lived and met in Brussels. Because the music scene there is so small, everyone who is serious about what they're doing in music, sooner or later run into each outher. We all knew and respected each other long before forming this band. JazzandSoul : What do you think is the main ingredient for good soul music ? Soul:ID : V : Generosity is the key element. Soul music is organic and natural, you can't scam or fake your way, whatever instrument you're using - it needs to come from the heart. JazzandSoul : How were the reactions during your US tour and did you have to fight against the prejudice that 'good soul music can't be European based' ? Soul:ID : Dad'D : We have been received very well. JazzandSoul : Which European Soul music do you guys dig ? Soul:ID : Tchaï : There is some stuff out here, but it never gets any support, and so the acts never get
any chance to grow ...
