When I received the Soul:ID album I was kind of overpowered by contradictory feelings. On one side delighted, frustrated on the other side. Delighted because Soul:ID's album Sex, Love & Philosophy proves that we have world class soul music in Europe (even in Belgium), frustrated because I can really get angry, knowing that artists like these, just don't get the attention they deserve from media, while these are the kind of albums that should go platinum within a week. Well ... it only gives us more strength to continue doing what we do. Soul:ID, four members, four different countries, one sound. Their debut Sex, Love & Philosophy has become a collection of 'Afropean' soul tunes. Produced very smoothly, killer beats and grooves and great vocal harmony. The sensual voice of Tchaï welcomes us into the Soul:ID world and invites us into Believe, a funky track with a reverse kind of base lick. True immediately stands out for me as one of the most pleasent surprises on the CD. A cover from the 80's Spandau Ballet hit. Not my most favourite 80's music but the track turns out to be nicely remastered into a fresh, contemporary tune. On this 17 track album, Soul:ID has managed to reach an extremely high quality standard. The funky midtempo lovesong Even Though, a superb My Philosophy, Love of my Life with an overdose of hitpotential that blows 99% of modern R&B away, Beaty & Sin, that starts with some wicked close harmony vocals and eveloves in another bombtrack, the smooth acid jazz of Last night's defintion of Touch. Sex, Love & Philosophy for me, already is a standard in it''s genre with snippets of a funky Jamiroquai, a Lauryn Hill at her best and the class of a wayward Erykah Badu. Highly, highly recommended.
