Soul UnsignedSoul Songbook 1© 2009 Soul Unsigned Records
"Again, a new world of heavenly soul music opens up." 1. I'm staying home Tonight - Ashanti Munir
Reviewing Phil Driver's Soul Unsigned releases is the easiest thing to do. Simply because you don't have to check the CD for quality tunes as this is an unconditional certainty. We're proud here at JazzandSoul that we've been there from the first EP releases and again are delighted to welcome the newest scion in the family entitled The contemporary soul Songbook.2. Where do we go from Here - Antoinette 3. Tongue Tide - Lisa Zuré 4. Never say Never - Woody Cunningham 5. On my Mind - Trish Andrews 6. Phenomenal Woman - Fola 7. Living for Today - LeNora Jaye 8. India - Eddie Sea ft. Aaron Sledge 9. At Times - Razzberry 10. Can't settle for Less - Tracey Harris 11. Over - Sophia Nelson 12. Lost Paradise - Jua 13. Come Over - Tammy Harris 14. Mirage - Ariana Jane 15. Just Because - Donald Sheffey 16. Saying Less - Nash Reed Phil's intentions with Soul Unsigned are still of a noble cause ... providing unsigned soul artists with a place to shine, namely the Soul Unsigned compilations. But what started with 2, four - track EP's, has now evolved into the release of full albums, filled with pearls from the 'underground' soul movement and a clever business surrounding it. As The contemporary soul Songbook is announced as the first CD in a new series, Phil stayed true to his golden formula, collecting highlight tracks from today's modern soul artists. And did he succeed again ... This time, 16 tracks fill up the disc for over 70 minutes of heart - warming soul music. A perfect balance between slow jams and mid - tempo grooves and a star cast of independent performers such as LeNora Jaye, Razberry and ashanti Munir. Phil states it perfectly in the CD booklet. Too many people, interested in soul music, still buy 'endless re - issues or best of compilations from artists of yesteryear'. However, digging in the richness of contemporary soul music might become a satisfactional occupation once started for a lot of fans. And Phil delivers the perfect spring - board with his CD's. 'If we all shout loud enough and long enough, maybe one day someone who really can make a difference will actually hear us' ... we'll be shouting alongside ... no matter what. Buy the Soul Unsigned collection, browse around in their newly opened Soulshop and I assure you ... a new world of heavenly music will open up. Once again, this is a highly recommended album.
