If you're a regular visitor here on JazzandSoul, this will come as no surprise, but we have been huge supporters of Phil Driver's Soul Unsigned series from the beginning, and we still are.
Now with this volume 3 release in the original Soul Unsigned series , I've took a minute to re - check all of Phil's previous releases and had to conclude that Soul Unsigned still remains a wonderful, ever progressing concept.
The biggest mistake often made is that compilers of these collections start taking success for granted and therefore 'just put together' a set of songs, press it, release it and ... cash it. Believe me ... as much cheers and praise a project receives, as easy it can get demolished by critics.
And that's exactly where Phil distincts himself from the flock. Tracks that make it to the Soul Unsigned albums have passed a thorough examination, that's obvious, and only enriching, original and outstanding tracks end up being released. If this property is being guarded well as it is now ... Soul Unsigned will be here for many years to come for sure.
With this third volume, Phil has definitely surpassed previous CD's as the balance of the songs approximates perfection more and more. And even for someone who has the opportunity to discover a lot of new artists every week, Soul Unsigned still offers a couple of pleasant surprises.
14 wonderful tracks for over 67 minutes of contemporary soul with highlights from J. Stever, The Constituens, Daniel Nelson & Mark Drummond and Unified Tribe.
Phil, my friend ... keep treating us with your fantastic albums as you're opening up new worlds for thousands of fans.
