JIMI HENDRIX - BAND OF GYPSYS LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST This is a live registration recorded in the last year before he died. This concert has so much blues and soul! Not the usual pop song structure and a lot of improvising with very dynamic play. Anyway, untill I discovered this record between my dad's vinyl collection I had only known Hendrix as a rock 'n roll guitar hero. I had already learned almost every song of Electric Ladyland and Axis: Bold as Love on guitar. The Band of Gypsys record was an eye-opener to me. When I heard the first track, "Who Knows", I really was like woh! Hendrix was playing soul and funk. Probably because of the drummer, which was Buddy Miles instead of Mitch Mitchell and I really like Mitch a lot as well! Then I heard the second track "Machine Gun", a political song because of the war in Vietnam, fights in Milwaukee and Chicago ... The intro and lyrics are really, really great. But the first two long notes of his solo!! The sound, the feedback of his amp, the atmosphere ... Dammmn it goes deep. D'ANGELO - VOODOO In 2000, I accidentally saw D'Angelo live at the North Sea Jazz festival during his Voodoo tour. One of my best friends, who is really into jazz music, had invited me to the NSJ festival (I wasn't a jazz fan at that time). After hearing ten thousand jazz solo's within two hours, I got a little bit bored. Then I read in the festival program that ?uestlove was on the drumseat with D'Angelo. I already knew The Roots from skateboard videos I used to watch and had seen them live a year earlier. I was very curious what he was going to do. Also, all the nice girls were walking to that stage :-). So I said bye bye to my friends who only wanted to check out jazz/bebop artists. > Read more |
