In the U.S., Toni Redd is known and respected as a tremendous vocalist with a voice that can cut a wide range of musical styles. With her second solo album, 'N' the key of Redd, Toni returns to her beloved music combining sultry soul with contemporary R&B and jazz. Openers Anytime of Day and Holding on to your Love are smooth flowing soultracks which display Toni's beautiful voice, which often remind me ofMaysa. A lot of tracks by the way would fit in well on any Maysa or Incognito album. Toni's musical style is undeniable jazz, her vocals are of a classic soul variety and the tracks are built up around themes and hooks that die to be pop singles. As the self - written songs are of a very high quality standard, Toni's cover of (one of my favourite Christopher Cross cuts) Sailing is one of pure beauty. Enriched with vocal harmonies and a super saxophone solo at the end. A track that certainly honours the original. Downtempo beats fill up the majority throughout the record and while a lot of these albums often carry the disease of becoming monotous, 'N' the key of Redd stands out thanks to the variety in the songs, the beauty of the arrangements and undoubtly the pureness of Toni's vocal chords. Personal favourites on this 10 track CD for me are I Apologize, Love is Gone (with a typical Incognito vibe), Sailing and We should Care. If you're looking for a record that's pleasant to listen to, any time of the day, Toni Redd's, 'N' the key of Redd certainly is a must Highly recommended.
